Our 5-day trip to Pleiku, Kon Tum, and Buon Ma Thuot began last January. Everything went perfectly: the weather in the central highlands 5 days was pleasant, cool, and dry, making the experience even more memorable. The Vietnam travel agency Autour Asia carefully crafted the itinerary, allowing us to explore the region's natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Here are the details of our 5 days itinerary in Pleiku - Kon Tum - Buon Ma Thuot:
Highlights of day 1:
We took an early morning flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Buon Ma Thuot on the first day. Our driver picked us up at the airport and took us to Dray Nur Waterfall, a truly stunning sight. We hiked around the waterfall and took in the breathtaking natural scenery.
Our next stop was Buon Don, where we crossed a bamboo suspension bridge. It was a bit of a challenge, but the view of the Srepok River flowing beneath made it all worthwhile. In the village, we met the Lao and M’Nong ethnic groups and visited a 120-year-old traditional house.
After lunch in the village, we continued our journey to visit the house of the elephant hunter king Ama Kong. This traditional stilt house features unique architecture, and all the original objects are carefully preserved, recreating the living space of the legendary elephant hunter from the 19th century.
We then returned to our hotel in Buon Ma Thuot city center. After some rest, we explored the night market and enjoyed delicious local specialties such as banh beo, banh uot, and bun do. End of day 1 of our 5-day itinerary in Pleiku - Kon Tum - Buon Ma Thuot.
Highlights of day 2:
In the morning, we left our hotel in Buon Ma Thuot, where our driver picked us up and took us to Khai Doan Pagoda, the largest Buddhist temple in the city. Our guide shared fascinating insights about its history, sacred rituals, and elegant architecture. The name “Khai Doan” is a combination of the names of a former king and his wife.
Next, we headed to Trung Nguyen Coffee Village, an open-air museum displaying various historical artifacts related to coffee culture in the region. Since Buon Ma Thuot is known as the coffee capital of Vietnam, we had the chance to taste some of the finest coffee in the country. We also explored traditional coffee-making tools and learned to distinguish different varieties, including the famous civet coffee, considered a luxury product.
In the afternoon, our driver took us to see the two massive iron elephant statues, symbolizing prosperity in the central highlands of Vietnam. To end this beautiful day, we continued our journey to Pleiku, stopping by T’Nung Lake, also known as the blue eyes of the city. We enjoyed a peaceful moment sipping hot tea by the water.
We then checked into our hotel, relaxed, and had a delightful dinner in the charming Pleiku city, marking the end of day 2 of our Pleiku - Kon Tum - Buon Ma Thuot 5-day tour.
In the morning, we left our hotel in Pleiku, had breakfast, and then headed to Minh Thanh Pagoda. This majestic pagoda reminded me of Chinese and Japanese architecture, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
After our visit, we had lunch at To Nung restaurant, located near Pleiku Lake. In the afternoon, we explored the Yaly Hydropower Plant, nestled along the serene Se San River. This was our last stop before heading to Kon Tum for the night.
Highlights of day 4:
After breakfast, we started our day exploring Kon Tum. Our first stop was the wooden church, a fascinating blend of Western architecture and the rustic charm of Ba Na ethnic culture. Next, we visited the Bishop’s Palace, an elegant building surrounded by lush greenery.
We then crossed the Kon Klor Suspension Bridge, which offered a scenic view of the Dak Bla River winding through the town. Along the way, we observed local life - young women in traditional dresses taking photos by the riverbank, while ox carts slowly made their way across the bridge, adding a picturesque touch to the scene.
At noon, we drove to Mang Den, a small town where we had lunch and spent the night. In the afternoon, we visited the statue of Our Lady of Mang Den, a significant pilgrimage site for local worshippers. We also made a quick stop at Khanh Lam Pagoda, a tranquil spiritual retreat hidden in the wilderness.
Our last major stop of the day was Pa Sy Waterfall, one of the highlights of our 5 days itinerary in Pleiku, Kon Tum, and Buon Ma Thuot. We followed a scenic trail through the pristine forest to reach the base of the waterfall, where we marveled at the cascading white waters plunging into a crystal-clear blue pool.
Before the day ended, we visited Kon Tu Rang Village, where we explored traditional stilt houses and observed villagers engaging in their traditional crafts, such as rice wine brewing and weaving. To wrap up our adventure, we bought a few souvenirs and spent our last night in a stilt house, bringing our unforgettable 5-day journey in the central highlands in Vietnam to a close.
On the final day of our 5 days trip to Pleiku - Kon Tum - Buon Ma Thuot, we had breakfast before checking out of our accommodation in Mang Den.
